Chiropractic Care for the Treatment of Sciatica Pain

Sciatica Pain Treatment

Do you suffer reoccurring back pain that shoots down to your hips or legs? Does your lower back also have the sensation of numbness or tingling in your legs? If so, you might have sciatica or sciatic pain. If you are experiencing pain from sciatica, you are not alone. Almost 40% of the population has experienced sciatic pain at one point in their lives (i). The Board Certified Doctors of Chiropractic at Wilbeck Chiropractic are experts at treating patients with sciatic pain. We’ll relieve your pain and get you back to feeling good quickly.

What Causes Sciatic Pain?

Unlike other kinds of lower back pain, sciatica originates from pain in the sciatic nerve itself. The sciatic nerve is formed by five other nerve root systems that merge in the lower back and continue down both hips and legs. The sciatic nerve’s circumference is about as thick as your index finger, making it the largest nerve in the human body (ii). It controls the flow of sensory impulses from the lower back to the body’s lower extremities, like the hips, legs, and feet. The term sciatica refers to when a patient experiences back pain that radiates along these nerve passageways. Sciatica generally affects only one side of the body, but it is not unusual for more severe cases to have bilateral involvement, affecting both hips or legs (iii).

What Causes Neck Pain?

Many factors can contribute to someone having a flare-up of sciatic pain. Most sciatic pain originates from their nerve endings being exposed to extra pressure from the spinal column, subjecting them to intense and often intolerable pain. The most common reason people experience a sciatica flare-up is from a herniated disc, but other factors like car accidents, falls, pregnancy, or inflammation can contribute. Sciatic pain can impair a person’s ability to function in their day-to-day life, making simple activities like walking, standing, working, playing, and even resting difficult or even unbearable.

What Are the Symptoms of Sciatica?

Although it can present differently from person to person, many people with sciatica display a series of common symptoms. Listed below are some of the more frequent symptoms of sciatica:

  • Lower Back Pain
  • Hip Pain
  • Buttock Pain
  • Leg Pain
  • Foot Pain
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Incontinence
  • Difficulty Standing or Walking

Treating Chronic Sciatica Pain with Chiropractic Care

You do not have to live with sciatica pain! Wilbeck’s Board Certified Doctors of Chiropractic can relieve you of your pain and help you recover quickly in most cases. Sciatica doesn’t have to be a chronic, life sentence; let the team at Wilbeck Chiropractic help you find relief.

Our team of chiropractors in Wichita, KS take a holistic approach to treating pain at its source, the nervous system. We have treated countless patients experiencing chronic and acute pain, including those with sciatica.

The doctors at Wilbeck take the time to assess each of their patients and discuss their unique challenges and concerns. Our chiropractors develop specific pain treatment “action plans” for each patient. We take a holistic approach to care, treating the “whole person”, pinpointing and treating the source of pain vs. treating symptoms. Our goal is to help every patient achieve optimal health and maintain it.

During initial assessments, our doctors physically evaluate each patient, identifying areas of the spine and joints that might be out of alignment. Once the source of pain is discovered, treatment protocol is discussed with the patient. Most chiropractic treatment involves gentle pressure to the affected the areas of the body, muscles and joints. Gradual readjusting of the spine back into proper alignment is our goal. Chiropractic treatment is non-invasive. Patients often feel and hear a small popping sensation as their spinal column is realigned during treatments. It is not uncommon for our patients to state that they experience relief from their pain after just a few adjustments.

With sciatica pain, it is common for patients to experience recurring flare-ups. Wilbeck Chiropractic recommends patients schedule regular adjustments to maintain spine health and to help prevent future sciatic pain.
